1905-1907 WALES INTERNATIONAL RUGBY UNION JERSEY WORN BY RHYS GABE (1880-1967) HAVING BEEN SWAPPED WITH IRISH OPPONENT BASIL MACLEAR bearing embroidered Prince of Wales feathers on a black background, four buttons and white collar, bears label to back of waist for J C Stewart, Edinburgh¦Provenance: quotation by Rhys Gabe in `Fifty Years of the All Blacks` `The match between Munster and the All Blacks in November 1905 afforded Basil Maclear the opportunity of creating a unique record - that of playing against the All Blacks four times. What the extent of Munster`s defeat would have been without the heroic deeds of Maclear is a matter of conjecture. Captain Maclear was a charming personality and persona grata, with all his opponents on and off the field. I was delighted to exchange jerseys with him after a memorable Ireland v Wales game, when we were Captains and opposite numbers at Centre ¦`¦¦Statement from vendor `after Basil was killed in 1915, all of his effects were sent to his mother and she in turn passed them on to her granddaughter, my mother. (I should point out that my grandfather Percy, Basil`s brother, had already been killed less than a year earlier, and a third of the five brothers was killed towards the end of the Great War). My mother was the only child of that generation. Of my mother`s children, I was the sportsman, so she passed all of Basil`s effects to me. These included a a suitcase containing his rugby jerseys and caps, comprising three Ireland jerseys (one with his name-tag sewn in), a Welsh jersey and an All Blacks Originals jersey. He had played against them 4 times on their 1905 tour. I have been caring for these since they came into my possession in 1974. I am the son of the late Eileen Bickford, nee Maclear and Basil Maclear was my mother`s uncle`.¦¦¦¦

H M LLewellyn`s `Foxhunter``, a cast-metal medallion inscribed `Chio Roma 1954`, a hardback volume of `Passports to Life - An Autobiography` and a John Board inkwash painting of Llewellyn in action at an arena.¦¦Auctioneer`s Note: Sir Harry Llewellyn, 1911-99, 3rd Baronet, was a British equestrian champion, initially riding as a steeplechaser, he finished second in the 1936 Grand National and 4th on the same horse in 1937, before war intervened and in 1948 he and his horse Foxhunter competed at the Olympic Games in London, where they finished 3rd in the team event, claiming the bronze medal.¦¦Shortly afterwards they won the King George V Gold Cup at the International Horse Show and again in 1950 and 1953. Sir Harry remains the only rider to score a hat-trick of victories with the same horse in this prestigious competition.¦However, it was the gold medal they won at the 1952 Olympic Games held in Helsinki, Britain`s only gold at the games, that would cement their reputation.¦¦Over the next decade, Harry Llewellyn and Foxhunter won 78 international competitions and Harry went on to become active in the administration of British show-jumping. In 1977 he was knighted and succeeded to the Llewellyn Baronetcy after the death of his elder brother.¦¦Provenance: by direct family descent¦¦¦¦¦¦

WILL EVANS watercolour - historical 1941 Swansea blitz scene with bomb damage and debris on Wind Street looking up to High Street, 46 x 54cms ¦Auctioneer`s Note: the `Swansea Blitz` was the heavy and sustained bombing of Swansea by the German Luftwaffe from 19 to 21 February 1941, whereby 230 residents lost their lives and more than 390 were injured. Swansea was selected by the Germans as a legitimate strategic target with its port, the docks and the neighbouring oil refineries. The destruction was key to Nazi Germany`s strategic bombing campaign aimed at curtailing coal export and demoralising civilians, while stretching local emergency services. Local artist Will Evans was the only notable person to document in art the destruction of Swansea, after the bombing. There are fine similar examples on show at The Glynn Vivian Gallery in Swansea, but rarely do these important historical paintings appear on the market.
