Bidding & Buying

Taking part in our auctions has never been simpler. All auctions are conducted live on our own live bidding platform which is free to use.

We want to make buying at auction as transparent, accessible and straightforward as possible, no matter the price point of the lot you are after.

The Basics

Buyer’s Fees

There is a commission employed by Fine Art auctioneers called Buyers Premium this is calculated as a commission of the hammer price. Our Buyers Premium rates vary according to the type of auction. You will find this information when you log in to bid live on the Rogers Jones Live platform and when completing commission bid or telephone bidding forms.

Condition Reports & Viewing

It is recommended that you view in person the items before bidding if this is practical to do so. Alternatively a condition report and extra images can be requested by email, but not verbally.

Caveat Emptor

'Caveat Emptor' or 'let the buyer beware' is the custom practiced throughout the auction industry. Bidders are given opportunity to view and examine all items in auctions, either in person or digitally, when bidders must satisfy themselves with the suitability of lots prior to the auction. The descriptions in all auction catalogues are opinions only at the time of writing and do not act as guarantees. Please see the full terms and explanation when registering to bid.

Shipping of Purchases

At our discretion, we do offer in-house postage & packing for non delicate and small items which can be packed in Jiffy bags, tubes, card envelopes and so forth. This is always at our discretion and the cost can be added to your invoice. Please enquire before bidding.

For more valuable items, bulky lots or delicate items we can recommend various couriers and shippers. If bidding online you may receive a quote for shipping from Auction Logistics - please note that this is an option only.

In many cases, items can be moved from the auction location to the nearest Rogers Jones & Co office to you for collection. Normally this service does not include furniture. It is free of charge but it is at our timescale (normally within a few weeks). Should you require items urgently after an auction please do not rely on this free service. Again, please enquire before you bid.

Bidding Methods

There are various ways to bid depending on the auction:

Bidding at the saleroom

Available for some auctions. When you arrive at the saleroom we will register your details and issue you with a bidding card. Please ensure that there is bidding in the room for the auction before you set-off!

Online ‘live’ bidding

You can bid anywhere in the world providing you have internet connection. This is done on our website and is free of charge. Please make sure that you do not use your login details for www.the-saleroom.com when registering through our site as you will be charged their fee.

Commission Bidding / Pre Bids

Before the auction takes place, you can leave pre-bids on the lot through our website by clicking on the lot(s). Your bid will then be displayed on that lot at the lowest point ie. at the reserve if there are no other bids or at the next increment up from another bid. If your bid is then exceeded, you will be notified and given the option to bid again should you wish to. In effect the auction has begun and pre-bids help you determine whether in fact you have a chance to win the item before the proper auction commences.

Alternatively, if you have visited the saleroom to see in person the lot(s) then a form can be completed and returned at the auction office.

Commission bids must be submitted by close of business on the day before the sale. If identical bids are submitted, the person who bids first will take precedence.

Telephone Bidding

You can take part in the sale by bidding over the telephone for lots and providing you are prepared to bid up to at least the middle of the estimate. Telephone lines must be booked by close of business on the day before the sale, but they are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. The completion of a form is required, please enquire to receive the form.

Payment

Payment (in pounds sterling) can be made as soon as you have won your lot(s) by bank transfer only. If you are bidding in the room (where available) payment can be made via debit card (not credit card).

Our bank account details will be on the invoice that we email you.

Payment should be made within three days of the sale, and monies from wire transfers and cheques must be cleared into our account before items may be collected.

Droite de Suite

There is a 4% levee charged to the buyer on works of art by EEA and UK artists who are living or have died in the last 70 years of the auction, and which sell for an auction hammer price over £1000. Droit de suite - Wikipedia
