Donald McIntyre at the Spring Welsh Sale Auction

Donald McIntyre’s expressive landscapes, strongly influenced by the Scottish Colourist tradition, have become a familiar highlight of our triannual Welsh Sale auction. Prices for his work at auction have continued to rise in recent years, with Rogers Jones & Co. holding three of the top five highest UK results for his work.

Donald McIntyre is often thought of as a Welsh artist, having spent some 45 years in North Wales, where his early commercial success was supported by the Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff. However, he was born in Leeds to Scottish parents and spent his childhood on Scotland’s west coast.

He initially trained as a dentist, attending evening classes at Glasgow School of Art. After practising in the army and later in the school service, he moved to North Wales in the late 1950s. At 40, he left dentistry to paint full-time.

The British coastline remained a constant source of inspiration - particularly Anglesey, Cornwall, and the island of Iona, where he returned often spent his summers painting.

At this year’s Spring Welsh Sale auction (Part I), Donald McIntyre's work closes the auction with ten of his paintings on offer.
