Donald McIntyre (1923-2009) at Auction
We often think of McIntyre as a Welsh artist, as he spent some 45 years of his artistic career in North Wales, and his first commercial steps came through The Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff. However, he was born in Leeds to Scottish parents, and his childhood was spent on the west coast of Scotland.
McIntyre initially trained as a dentist, during which time he attended evening classes at Glasgow School of Art. He went on to practise dentistry in the army and later in the school service, before moving to North Wales in the late 1950s. At the age of 40, he left dentistry to pursue painting full-time.
He drew lasting inspiration from the British coastline, particularly Anglesey, Cornwall, and the island of Iona, to which he frequently returned.
