RAY HOWARD JONES gouache on board - a fascinating and important Welsh wartime study; the cliff-top at Penarth with a troop of figures, flag-pole and gunner, entitled verso `Arrowhead - Home Guard Exercise`, signed and dated `42, 29.5 x 40cms¦Provenance: exhibited at Tenby Museum & Gallery Ray Howard Jones retrospective¦Auctioneer`s Note: Ray Howard Jones applied to the War Artists Advisory Committee via Sir Kenneth Clarke for a commission as a war artist, to make drawings and paintings of the docks in Penarth and Cardiff. She submitted various drawings and paintings to the Committee throughout 1942 with the first purchase made in November of that year, and further purchases in 1943. She was famously commissioned to produce pictures of the preparations for the D-Day landings in 1944. The Imperial War Museum has nine of her wartime pictures in their collection. The location of the exercise is on the Welsh Coastal Path and interestingly one can see the remains of an anti-aircraft battery at Lavernock Point, close to Penarth which was used to defend Cardiff and Bristol from German bombers following the Severn Estuary
