On June 1st, Welsh artist Bryn Richards turns 100 years old.

In addition to a card from the Queen, his birthday will be celebrated by an auction of his paintings at the beautiful Cornerstone building in Cardiff on Tuesday 24 May.

Profits from the sale will go to City Hospice.

Born in Alfred St, Roath, Cardiff, Bryn has had a colourful life over the past century.

Educated at Cardiff High School, he then went on to study at Cardiff School of Art under the guidance of artist Ceri Richards before joining the Royal Navy and serving in Scotland, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Following the war, Bryn taught in Lancashire before returning to Cardiff in 1950 to teach at Cardiff High School, becoming Head of Art.

In 1954, he married Enid Collins and they had two daughters, Rachel and Sarah.

Bryn has exhibited all over Wales and, in 1965, began a supplementary career as a professional art critic for The Guardian, also writing for The Anglo-Welsh Review.

Bryn only stopped painting three years ago so was active for 82 years. His life as an artist will be celebrated at Cornerstone with champagne and canapes before a live auction of 41 paintings. Led by BBC Bargain Hunt auctioneer, Ben Rogers Jones of Rogers Jones & Co Auctioneers & Valuers, profits will be given to City Hospice.
