Auction Review: April 2026
Number of auctions: 5
Number of lots sold: 1382
Total hammer price: £1,202,483
April 2026 proved to be a month of very memorable moments for the auctioneering team and career highlights for the auctioneers. I was especially pleased to see my colleague Charles Hampshire sell such an exciting coin collection in Chester and it was a great experience to watch 'Una and the Lion' sell for over £100,000 from a starting point of £40,000. Such auctions live long in the memory!
9th April: Estate Jewellery, Very Fine Coins & Watches
Our bi-monthly Jewellery, Coins & Watches sale was a numismatist's paradise, with great examples of sovereigns, lire, krugerrands, and more on offer. The highlight was undoubtably Una and the Lion coin, discovered at a house clearance in Gwynedd, which sold for £110,000. You can read more about this beautiful coin here.

19th April: The Welsh Sale (Part I)
Our triannual Welsh Sales continue to go from strength to strength. With an average sell-through rate of 93% across the two sales and a combined hammer total of £563,590, it was the second-highest total in the history of the Welsh Sale.
It will come as no surprise that the top lot of the day was by Sir Kyffin Williams. Achieving £55,000, this oil painting of St David’s Head now ranks as the fifth-highest price ever achieved for the artist at auction, further cementing The Welsh Sale as the leading platform for his work, having delivered all top five auction results.

21st April: Colwyn Bay Monthly
Our monthly auction at Colwyn Bay featured antique and mid-century furniture, silver, Moorcroft ceramics, and works of art including a collection of paintings by Kenneth Harold Gresty.

21st April: The Welsh Sale (Part II)
The second part of April’s Welsh Sale featured furniture, Gregynog Press books, and unreserved Welsh art.
A remarkable photograph of Frank Lloyd Wright by photographer Edward Steichen achieved more than double its top estimate.
An 18th-century Welsh stick chair—our Carmarthen-based auctioneer Charles Hampshire’s favourite lot—proved especially popular, selling for £1,500.
A collection of Gregynog Press books, including a significant consignment from descendants of the Davies sisters, also performed strongly, with over half the lots surpassing their upper estimates. The top lot of the day was The Plays of Euripides, which sold for £4,400 against an estimate of £1,800–2,500.

28th April: Cardiff Monthly
Our last auction in April featured silver, works of art, Troika pottery, collectables and furnishings. The real surprise of the day was an oil painting by Evy Campbell, which sold for £5,500 on an estimate of £100-150.
