The Ritchie Ovendale Collection of African Tribal Sculpture

Rogers Jones & Co are delighted to be instructed to sell the collection of African sculpture by the estate of the late Professor Richard Ovendale

The collection comprises carved and cast metal masks and figures from the major cultures of West and Central Africa, produced for sale in the late 20th Century. The collection will be offered without reserve in a Timed Auction in the Spring of 2023, with estimates from £20 to £500 only.

Ritchie Ovendale was born in Pretoria in 1944, and following BA and MA degrees at Natal University, was motivated to leave South Africa by the apartheid system which helped shape his political awareness. He completed his DPhil at New College Oxford, before joining the International Politics department at Aberystwyth University in 1968, where he taught for the rest of his career. He was an accomplished historian and prolific author, including The Origins of the Arab-Israeli Wars (Longman 1984), The English-Speaking Alliance: Britain, the US, the Dominions and the Cold War 1945-1951 (Harper Collins, 1985), and Modern Middle East: an Introductory and International History (Pearson, 2014) to name but a few.
