Mouseman
Few British furniture makers have left a mark as distinctive as Robert “Mouseman” Thompson (1876-1955). Known for his solid English oak furniture, traditional craftsmanship and tiny carved mouse, Thompson created a unique trademark that remains instantly recognisable to collectors today.
Robert Thompson was born in Kilburn, a small village in North Yorkshire, in 1876. Despite being the son of a carpenter, Robert didn’t originally follow his father into the trade, instead travelling to Cleckheaton, some 60 miles from home, to apprentice as a mechanical engineer. Described by him later as “five years of penal servitude”, it was clear that job and bustling town life didn’t suit him, and at the age of 20 he asked his father if he could return home and join him as a carpenter.
"The origin of the mouse as my mark was almost in the way of being an accident. I and another carver were carving a huge cornice for a screen and he happened to say something about being as poor as a church mouse. I said I’ll carve a mouse here and did so, then it struck me, what a lovely trade mark. This was about 30 years ago.
Our vicar asked me what was its meaning. I said, “It means industry in a quiet place.”"
