AN HISTORIC NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION CAP FOR WILLIAM `BILL` CUNNINGHAM (1874-1927) - AN IMPORTANT MAORI & ORIGINAL ALL BLACK PLAYER¦¦The cap in black velvet with attached silvered tassel, silver New Zealand fern and `NZ` and with embroidered dates for representation 1901, 1905, 1906, 1907 and 1908¦Bill Cunningham was one of the Originals who toured British Isles, France and the North America in 1905 with Dave Gallaher`s famous team. Cunningham, a lock with super scrummage ability, played in 23 of the 32 matches and played in three Test matches on the tour, against Scotland, Ireland and France. Due to injury Cunningham was not available for the famous Wales match which was the only defeat on tour for The Originals.¦¦Born near Te Awamutu, Cunningham originally played club rugby in Waihi, in the Coromandel region. Lying within the Auckland Rugby Football Union`s boundaries, he was selected to play for Auckland province in 1899 and continued to represent the side until his retirement in 1913. He was first picked for New Zealand in 1901, and played against New South Wales that year, but was not selected again until the 1905 Originals` tour. ¦¦After the tour he continued to represent New Zealand in both 1907 and 1908. Affiliating to Rongowhakaata, he was a member of the first ever New Zealand Maori team in 1910, and played for them again in 1912. On retirement in 1913 he had appeared for Auckland 45 times, and for New Zealand 39 times.¦¦Intriguingly Bill Cunningham was the grandson of the famous New Zealand founder-father Thomas Halbert, a whaler and trader from England who landed in Poverty Bay in 1832. Bill was born at Rangiaowhia, near Te Awamutu, on 8 July 1874, son of Hera (Sarah) Ngaihika Halbert and her second husband, James Cunningham. Hera was the daughter of Thomas Halbert and Keita Kaikiri, who belonged to the Rongowhakaata a Maori iwi of the Gisborne region of New Zealand North Island. He married Ethel Minnie Dance of Waihi on 23 September 1907 and the same year, Ethel gave birth to their son, William Henry Cunningham, but he died at only a day old. This was the only child the couple had. ¦¦Cunningham was very physically fit, strong and agile for a forward. With Billy Stead, he was one of only two Maori in the 1905-06 All Black side, Cunningham was able to speak the language. ¦¦Provenance: fresh to the market and entered to our auction by a family living in Auckland, New Zealand. Handwritten letter to accompany the cap outlining the route of the cap to the family via Great Uncle Robert Wylie `Dick` McGregor, a friend of Bill`s and fellow New Zealand capped player with Auckland. Also present a facsimile congratulatory telegram dated 1906 from Dick to Bill

AN HISTORIC 1974 TOUR DE FRANCE WORN YELLOW JERSEY FOR LEGENDARY MOLTENI RIDER EDDY MERCKX TOGETHER WITH AUTOGRAPHS & WINNERS RIBBON SASH¦¦The Le Coq Sportif cotton jersey with original zip, stitched silk `Almentari Molteni` sponsor label and cotton `Miko` label front and back and with three section lumbar pocket. The green white and red banded sash signed by Merckx. Black and white photos etc¦¦It is said of Edouard Louis Merckx that he is to cycling what Muhammad Ali is to boxing or Pel¦ is to football.... simply the best there has ever been. For 14 years between 1965 and 1978, cyclist Eddy `The Canibal` Merckx was a machine that dominated in what is regarded as cycling`s golden age with many memorable characters who, at any other time, would have gone on to become legends. ¦¦Merckx amassed 445 victories by simply crushing rivals, ruining their hopes and their careers. The Canibal`s legacy resides as much in the careers he ruined than his five Tour de France wins. So dominant had Merckx become by 1973 that he was ordered to stay away from the Tour for the good of the event.¦¦The 61st edition of the Tour de France in 1974 was notable for Merckx equalling French cyclist Jacques Anquetil`s five tour victories and he winning his fifth, and last, Tour de France five races. He won a record number of stages (32 surpassing the previous record of 25) and became the first man to win the Triple Crown of Cycling in the same year (Tour de France, Giro d`Italia and Tour de Suisse). The 1974 tour was also memorable for staging in the UK for the first time and for Basque separatist placed bombs on press and team cars. ¦¦Merckx was favourite leading up to the Tour despite for the first time in his professional career not winning a Classic Tour leading up to the main event and despite being absent for the 1973 tour but the odds were not improved by surgery on his perineum only five days before the 1974 Tour commenced!¦¦The following year, Merckx was subject to violence by a spectator during a stage preventing him winning the Tour de France for a record sixth time and beating the shared record of Tour victories. ¦¦Provenance: entered directly from Belgium by female Belgian vendor who was 20 years old in 1974. The vendor`s father was very friendly with Jean Crahay, the driver of the car of a Belgian sports newspaper. Crahay became good friends with Eddy Merckx and fellow Belgian cyclist Joseph Bruy¦re, they both gave Crahay yellow jerseys from the tour. The jersey were then in turn gifted to the vendor`s father who passed them on to the vendor who was a big fan of Eddy Merckx and the Tour de France at the time¦
