The Welsh Sale

Sat 19 October 2019, 10:00 AM - Cardiff Saleroom, South Wales

The Welsh Sale is a hugely popular auction of Welsh Art and Welsh porcelain, pottery and selected Welsh items.

The sale has been operating for over 10 years in its current format and has in that time generated some record prices.

We have in depth knowledge and expertise in the foremost Welsh artists, Swansea & Nantgarw porcelain and Llanelly pottery.

We were the valuers of Sir Kyffin Williams’s estate in 2006 and his art work is a prominent feature of every Welsh Sale as is Donald McIntyre, Josef Herman, Graham Sutherland, Gwilym Prichard, C F Tunnicliffe, John Piper and most of the well-known 20th Century Welsh painters.

Viewing: Friday 18 October (12 - 7pm) & the morning of auction (8:30 - 9:45am)

WITHDRAWN & SOLD TO NATIONAL LIBRARY OF WALES BY PRIVATE TREATY SYDNEY CURNOW VOSPER (1866-1942) watercolour, thin gouache and wash - `Salem`, with Sian Owen in detailed shawl and Welsh hat arriving at her pew in Capel Salem, Cefncymerau, North Wales, signed, 36 x 33cms¦¦ Rogers Jones & Co Auctioneers announce that ‘Salem’ by Sydney Curnow Vosper has been withdrawn from The Welsh Sale auction of October 19th and has been sold by treaty to The National Library of Wales. Although we were looking forward to the excitement and potential drama of seeing it being sold at the auction, we are immensely pleased that the painting will now remain in the public collection in Wales. The painting is a Welsh fine art icon and it was a privilege to handle it and write about it during its short tenure at our auction rooms. The terms of the sale are not to be made public. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the National Library of Wales for their expediency in agreeing the sale. I cannot think of a more dynamic, creative and worthy custodian than the Library, and I for one will be looking forward to seeing ‘Salem’ in its new home in Aberystwyth. I would also like to thank my client who from the outset had wished for the picture to remain in the public collection Condition report produced for National Museum of Wales by Kate Newton ARCA (freelance paper conservator) on releasing the painting from the archive room in September 2019: `generally good condition: historic slight fading and discolouration. Small white spot / accretion on arm of bench / right side of painting`¦¦Provenance: painted in 1909 for the artist`s brother-in-law Frank Treharne James , a Merthyr Solicitor and has been retained by his family ever since. Frank James had been disappointed to discover that the first `Salem` had been sold to William Hesketh Lever during the Royal Watercolour Society exhibition and so he requested the artist to paint another version.¦Exhibited Cyfarthfa Castle 2002. Exhibited at National Museum of Wales 2013, retained within their archive-rooms until consigned to auction. Exhibited at Bodelwyddan Castle 2005/2006 for `Faces of Wales` exhibition. Valued by Welsh Government for Indemnity Scheme at ¦50,000 in 2016. Never previously offered to market¦¦Auctioneer`s Notes: iconic is a word used on far too many occasions but unquestionably when it comes to `Salem` by Sydney Curnow Vosper the term is accurate. By some distance, it is the most famous painting relating to Wales and invariably the first to appear in internet search-engines for `Welsh Art` while thousands of prints adorn Welsh family homes. ¦Art historians and writers have made comparisons between `Salem` and John Constable`s `The Hay Wain` which is perhaps England`s most famous and iconic painting, but `Hay Wain` tells us very little about the people of England, only the landscape at a time and place. A better comparison for Salem is perhaps America`s most favourite painting `Nighthawks` by Edward Hopper or even France`s `Bal du Moulin de la Galette` by Renoir, as each painting tells of a time, a place but also a a narrative of the people and a national identity. Salem tells of a time shortly after the Nonconformists Revival when the chapel was central to communities in Wales, while life was simpler and more pious.¦¦Peter Lord in `The Tradition` 2016 (Parthian Books); `...the most celebrated image ever created of the common people of Wales and, indeed came to exemplify perception of their character. In the wake of a nationwide religious revival in 1904, the picture itself and its associated mythology entered Welsh homes and folk memory`. ¦¦There are a few differences between the two `Salem` paintings; such as the exclusion of a clock and a figure, while the proportions of each painting are different. The other `Salem` from which the prints were made has resided at Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight - in England since 1922 and one doubts that it will ever be offered to the public.¦¦The auction of this painting therefore provides a remarkable opportunity to own the most iconic of all Welsh images.¦¦¦
