Lot 353

JOSEPH MALLORD WILLIAM TURNER pencil and wash on paper - topographical watercolour sketch of a quarry with figure, campfire and equipment, entitled `A Slate Quarry in Wales`, probably painted 1798, 26 x 35cms¦Provenance: JMW Turner`s 1798 `North Wales Sketch Book` is archived at the Tate Britain. This watercolour was Lot No. 26 at Christie`s, London, November 21, 1978, it was subsequently sold privately to our vendor a short time afterwards. The 1978 auction hammer price was ¦1400 GBP (the equivalent of ¦7,600 today) a printed reference to the auction price available. The watercolour forms part of a private collection of academic nineteenth century and eighteenth century English watercolours collected by the deceased husband of a Vale of Glamorgan lady LATER AMENDMENT it has been suggested that the work may be slightly earlier than the 1798 Tour. The topographical style may indicate a work produced in the period 1794-6. Note that the aforemention to the sketch book at the Tate is as a reference to the Tour of North Wales, we are not necessarily suggesting that the sketch was originally part of the sketch book or dismissing this possibility
