Her father was a diplomat in the British Embassy and her mother had been in a student with me at the Slade. Nearly ten years later, I lodged in their London basement where I tried to paint in a kitchen studio. I painted Helen as a Brownie, and a later as a Girl Guide and also made several drawings of her. I also painted a full length portrait of her younger brother. I liked Helen and often wondered what had become of her.' Helen is in fact married and living in London, her maiden name was Reddaway

SIR KYFFIN WILLIAMS RA oil on canvas - dark woodland scene with industrial chimneys beyond, entitled verso on Albany Gallery label `Near Northampton`, signed with initials, 37 x 75cms¦Auctioneer`s Note: In 1949 Sir Kyffin Williams was sent to St Matthews Hospital in Northampton for treatment for his epilepsy which he described as a very dark time in his life. He was asked in an interview by author Cathy Courtney for The British Library project `Artist`s Lives` whether at this time he contemplated suicide and his response was typically candid `..well I did in the past, very often. There was one time I used to find myself going downstairs to get my gun, and in the end I told the doctor that he must send me to somewhere to keep an eye on me, and they sent me to St. Matthew`s, Northampton`. This may well explain the very dark nature of this particular composition

His sketched portrait of her became a hugely popular print and is symbolic of his 1968/69 trip to Y Wladfa (the Welsh colony). Norma, who was about 8 years old, loved to tease the artist and enjoyed sitting for her portrait and Sir Kyffin painted and sketched her on paper multiple times.
